Our ingredients

Welcome to our ingredient list which today contains all the ingredients we use in our formulations. Please feel free to contact us at info@skinome.se if you have any questions.

Acetyl Glucosamine is a building block of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in our skin and has an amazing water bonding ability, it can bind up to a thousand times its own weight of water! However, applying it to the skin has very little effect because hyaluronic acid is too large a molecule to penetrate the skin, it would be like trying to get a basketball through a needle. Therefore, we choose to include a building block for hyaluronic acid, namely Acetyl Glucosamine. It is a small molecule that can penetrate the skin and once there it helps to produce hyaluronic acid which in turn can bind water and moisturize the skin. It can also contribute to healthy cell turnover, protect skin collagen synthesis and reduce hyperpigmentation in the skin.

In skin care, it is common that acetylglucosamine is produced from the shrimp shell, but we use a new innovation produced via bacterial fermentation, therefore our raw material is vegan. The raw material is manufactured in China.

Calcium is one of our heroes in Rich Emulsion. Calcium is an important element, mineral and actually a skin-like substance, i.e. it is found naturally in the skin. In the epidermis we have a natural calcium gradient, with low calcium levels in the lower, basal epidermal layers, while calcium levels gradually increase towards the outer stratum granulosum and then sink again into the outer layer of the skin, stratum corneum. Calcium controls the differentiation, i.e. the maturation process and the renewal of the skin and its keratinocytes, which is very important for a strong skin barrier. A good and well-functioning renewal process means increased hydration and smoother skin texture.

Despite the continuous renewal of the epidermis (almost every 60 days, the epidermis is completely renewed and more than 80 billion keratinocytes (cells) are replaced in the body of an average adult), our skin will eventually be affected by aging as the turnover of keratinocytes decreases dramatically. Aging is associated with the epidermis becoming thinner with a reduced barrier function as a result. Since the differentiation of keratinocytes is strictly calcium dependent, calcium also plays an important role in aging the epidermis. Recently, it has been shown that the epidermal calcium gradient in the skin decreases in an aging of the skin.

We use calcium in from of Calcium PCA which has natural origin and is manufactured in France. Calcium PCA is produced from calcium oxide (a mineral) and the amino acid glutamic acid from European beetroot.

Skin endogenous or skin-mimicking?

Ceramide NP or Ceramide III, as it is also called, is a skin-like lipid that, together with cholesterol, builds up the lamellar structure of the stratum corneum (top layer of skin).  It has been shown in several studies that creams with ceramides both reduce inflammation of the skin and improve barrier function. The natural ceramide content of the skin changes with the change of season. In winter, levels are at their lowest and may be one reason why many people experience drier skin in the cold. Ceramide III has a molecular weight that allows it to enter the corneal layer (stratum corneum) where it helps maintain the lamella lipid film for a strong skin barrier.

Ceramide III is produced in Germany via the fermentation of maize and rapeseed oil from EU.

Cetearyl Alcohol belongs to the group of fatty alcohols (but do not confuse fat alcohols with alcohol/regular ethanol). Fatty alcohols are a group of substances commonly used in skin care. They are used to give a creamier and richer texture and have a moisturizing and softening effect. They also act as auxiliary emulsifiers, which means that they help the other emulsifiers in a skin cream to mix the oil with the water contained in the product, and stabilize it. Fat alcohols also form so-called lamellae structures in the emulsion, resulting in better moisturizing and softening properties.

We use Cetearyl alcohol in our mineral cleanser mainly to build the viscosity, i.e. its "thickness" or texture. This helps the cleaning cream to spread well on the skin.

Our Cetearyl Alcohol is coming from coconut and palm kernel oil from Indonesia and the Philippines, as well as rapeseed oil from Europe. The raw material is then manufactured in Germany.

Ectoin is a substance discovered in halophilic (= salt-loving) bacteria that live in extreme environments such as salty lakes and deserts. In addition to salty environments, they survive extreme temperatures, dryness and high levels of UV radiation. Ectoin helps the bacteria to survive in these extreme conditions by binding water, stabilizing and preventing the degradation of proteins and DNA, thus protecting the bacterial cell. Interestingly, Ectoin has similar effects in the skin, i.e. it binds a lot of water which moisturizes and protects the skin both in the short and long term.

Ectoin is produced through a biotechnological process in China.

This is a so-called postbiotic formed from fermented rice. Together with Maltitol and Arginine, it forms a unique and innovative emulsifier system that we use in Light Emulsion. This system binds water and oil into a cream and gives the cream a lamellar structure similar to the skin's natural hydrolipidic film, which also has a lamellar structure. It also gives the product a very light feel, allowing it to spread quickly and easily on the skin. This system has also been shown to have soothing and antioxidant properties and promotes active ingredients to penetrate the skin more easily.

Retinol is one of the best studied ingredients in the cosmetics industry. It is among the few substances proven in clinical studies that they affect the skin. Retinol is an active ingredient and is the natural form of vitamin A and is very beneficial for skin health. It is very potent and very small amounts (about 0.1%) in creams have been shown to have an effect. Retinol has been shown to reduce wrinkles, pigmentation from age spots, acne and texture. It can also make the upper layer of skin thicker. Retinol best used at night and in small amounts because too much can be annoying. Retinol is very bright, air and temperature sensitive and therefore easily breaks down and becomes inefficient. That's why we put Retinol in an airless and opaque pump package and encourages you to store it in the fridge. This way we can make sure that you get the same amount as we put in the product from and that the product remains effective all the time you use it.

Our Retinol is synthetically produced and produced in Germany.

Salicylic Acid (BHA) that we use is an innovative form of salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is encapsulated in prebiotic dietary fiber complexes made of dextrin, polydextosis and amyloctin, which makes salicylic acid significantly milder to the skin compared to free salicylic acid.

Salicylic acid, found naturally in the willow tree, has been used for thousands of years to treat various types of skin diseases. The first studies on the effects of salicylic acid in skin care were carried out in the 1950s as part of research in the field of psoriasis. It was only much later that its cosmetic effects on wrinkles and hyperpigmentation were observed.

BHA acids like AHA acids exfoliate the skin. The difference is that salicylic acid is slightly more lipophilic (fat soluble), so that it more easily enters the skin. As a result, it penetrates deeper into the sebaceous glands, which makes it possible to prevent the formation of blackheads.

The salicylic acid we use will from China and the complex are manufactured in South Korea.

Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate is an emulsifier used to image an emulsion (cream). The reason why we use this particular emulsifier is several. Only very low concentration is required and together with the auxiliary emulsifiers Glyceryl Stearate and Stearyl Alcohol, it forms a slatted structure. This slatted system is reminiscent of the lamella structure of the corneal layer and is therefore both skin-friendly and helps the skin to form a natural protective film.

Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate is of vegetable origin and is created by a merger of substances from certified sustainable palm oil (RSPO-MB) and coconut oil from Malaysia, philippines or Indonesia and sugar beet from France. The production of the raw material takes place in Germany.

Squalane is a stable form of Squalene found naturally in the skin. Squalene accounts for about 12% of the skin's natural sebum from sebaceous glands. Squalene is very unstable, if exposed to oxygen, it hardens and quickly becomes bad. That is why the stable version Squalane is used. Squalane has very effective softening properties and is used in our products to rebuild and strengthen the skin's protective lipid film.

The Squalane we use will from olives grown in Spain and Italy.

Zinc Ascorbate is an active ingredient that combines zinc and ascorbic acid, also known as vitamin C. Therefore, it has the properties of both raw materials:

Vitamin C is an antioxidant and protects the skin and prevents skin aging.

Zinc is the second most common mineral or tracer found naturally in the human body. It is found mainly in our muscles and bones but also naturally in the skin where it has many functions. It binds to various enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase, an important antioxidant for the skin. Zinc also has antimicrobial properties, which means that it has a mild preservative effect in the product.

Zinc Ascorbate has also been shown in a study to mimic superoxide dismutase activity better than vitamin C and zinc separately. In short, this means that the skin's defenses against free
radicals are improved, i.e. the skin is protected from visible signs of aging. Zinc Ascorbate has also been shown to have antimicrobial effect against the bacteria S. aureus and E. coli – two "evil bacteria" that we do not want in greater quantity on the skin.

Zinc Ascorbate in our products is manufactured in Germany.
